Mango is a deaf and blind 1.6 year old rat terrier/chi mix male who weighs 8 pounds. This boy is pure sweetness and had our hearts at the word go. His foster mom and trainer says this: This sweet little guy loves to snuggle and play. It has been amazing to see how well he gets around and enjoys life! When Mango first arrived, he would have moments of barking and panic and get into some serious spinning. With structure and some adjusting, he rarely shows those behaviors anymore. Keeping Mango feeling safe is the key. He loves snuggling into small spaces or to be held. He now has a small crate with cozy blankets that he chooses to spend time in on his own. Because Mango can’t see or hear, it’s important to provide him with stimulation and enrichment daily to keep him happy, healthy and anxiety free. If his time is spent exploring the world, it’s not spent in panic and spinning. Each day, Mango is given the opportunity to explore new scents, textures and objects. He searches for his food or eats from Kongs and puzzle feeders and loves exploring the yard. He feels most comfortable in defined spaces, on a sofa, bed or mat or blanket on the floor. To ease his transition into a new home, Mango should be allowed to get comfortable in small, defined spaces and gradually increase that to rooms and areas in the home. His foster mom is using relaxation techniques to help Mango feel secure in new environments and teaching him how to relax when he feels unsure. Mango is doing amazing but is still adjusting but needs guidance and support. He loves everyone he meets and bonds with his people. Mango will make a great companion and bring joy to his home!
